Physical Education & Sport Sciences
Sports training, movement science, and the teaching of physical education — preparing coaches, teachers and specialists for Iraq’s sporting and educational sectors.
Physical Education & Sport Sciences
The Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences is the academic core of the college. It delivers the bachelor’s programme in physical education, admitting secondary-school graduates from most branches of study, scientific and humanities alike.
Graduates are appointed as teachers on the secondary-school cadre, or work as specialists in sports training. The department’s purpose is to produce hundreds of academics, coaches and specialists for the field of physical education.
Students work across the foundations of the discipline — exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, sport psychology and pedagogy — while training practically in a range of individual and team sports, on the college’s pitches and courts. The intention is that graduates leave able both to explain why a training method works and to deliver it competently.
Vision & Mission
Vision
To be a distinguished department in the preparation of physical education teachers and sport specialists — grounded in the science of human movement, rigorous in practical training, and recognised for the professional quality of its graduates.
Mission
To prepare qualified graduates in physical education through a programme that integrates scientific study with extensive practical instruction, supported by applied research and by partnerships with schools, clubs and sporting federations that give students genuine experience before they graduate.
Objectives & Goals
A Message from the Head of Department
Sport science is a practical discipline with a rigorous foundation. A coach who does not understand how the body adapts to load will eventually injure the athletes in their care; a teacher who does not understand motor learning will struggle to teach a skill to a class of thirty. We treat the science and the practice as inseparable, because in the profession they are.
Our students spend their years here moving between the lecture hall and the practical session. They study physiology and biomechanics, and they plan and deliver training on the college’s own pitches and courts. By the time they graduate they have coached, taught and been assessed on both.
Iraq needs qualified physical education teachers and properly trained coaches, in schools and in clubs alike. This department exists to supply them, and I encourage anyone serious about that work to consider joining us.
